White House looks to exempt Canada from ‘Buy American’

The Obama administration is working to exempt Canada from "Buy American" provisions, an official at the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) office has confirmed.

The news has prompted Canadian mayors to call off a planned boycott of U.S. products.

"The United States and Canada held a first substantive meeting regarding Canada's proposal on government procurement," USTR deputy assistant Debbie Mesloh said. "Canada explained its proposal and answered questions from the United States on its proposal. (The) meeting was a good start to this process, and this will take time."....
