GM details post-bankruptcy fitness regime, plans progress

General Motors Co. outlined the progress it has made toward achieving commitments in its business plan, including implementing a leaner structure.

Since the July 10 launch of the new company, America's No. 1 automaker measured by sales has continued to rationalize its manufacturing operations, trim its work force and reduce finished vehicle inventories, it said Wednesday.

In the last 90 days, the Pontiac Assembly and Wilmington Assembly plants both ceased operations as part of a plan to reduce operations in the United States. By year-end, GM will have reduced the number of plants operating in the United States to 41 from 47 in 2008, excluding the component plants recently acquired from Delphi Corp., which itself exited from a four-year Chapter 11 bankruptcy process this week.....
