Auto crushers eye extra ‘Clunker’ disposal time

Auto crushers are seeking more time to dispose of cars from the "Cash for Clunkers" program, with many indicating they will have trouble meeting the deadline.
When the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (Cars) Program went into effect, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated that all disposal facilities must destroy the vehicles within a 180-day period.
But the program's three-week extension, coupled with additional $2 billion in funding, has prompted disposers to ask for an extension to process the 700,000 vehicles they received. In addition, the program was originally expected to end Nov. 1 and not Aug. 24.....
