Peck joins EPA list of Superfund sites

A former scrapyard was one of two metals sites added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) this week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which also signed a consent order with a Cleveland recycler to halt release of ozone-depleting refrigerants into the air.
The Peck Iron & Metal Superfund site in Portsmouth, Va., is a former scrapyard that operated from the 1940s through the 1990s. The 33-acre site is situated in a mixed residential and industrial area in the Tidewater region of southeastern Virginia, bordered in part by Paradise Creek, a tributary to the southern branch of the Elizabeth River and Chesapeake Bay. ....
