Alcoa idles Italian smelters after EC energy tariff ruling

Alcoa Inc. will temporarily curtail all production at its aluminum smelters in Fusina and Portovesme, Italy, after the European Commission ruled that the company must repay a portion of its Italian energy tariff.

Alcoa had received "illegal state aid" since 2006, the EC said, which allowed the Pittsburgh-based company to sell aluminum at a lower price, thus giving it an unfair advantage over its competitors.....
