Auto recyclers get more 'Clunker' crushing time

Although not as long as they had hoped, auto recyclers have been granted a "Cash for Clunkers" crushing deadline extension.
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will allow auto crushers an additional 90 days to dispose of vehicles that became obsolete through the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) Act, also known as the "Cash for Clunkers" program.
The new deadline for the initial cars traded in is Feb. 1, according to NHTSA. Each auto shredder has 270 days, after receipt of the vehicle from the dealer, to drain, strip and crush or shred vehicles traded in under the CARS program. Since vehicles were discarded over a period of weeks, the deadline differs slightly for each one.....
