Union contesting Xstrata’s close of Kidd Creek smelters

The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union is demanding that the federal government release details of the agreement it made with Xstrata Plc in 2006 to determine if the deal has been broken by the company's plans to close its Kidd copper and zinc smelters in Ontario.
Zug, Switzerland-based Xstrata announced Tuesday that it will permanently close its copper and zinc metallurgical plants at the Kidd Metallurgical site in Timmins (AMM, Dec. 9), which it acquired from Falconbridge in 2006. The Kidd mine and concentrator will remain in operation, Xstrata said. ....
