Schumer seeks stricter scrap metals theft law

Legislation aimed at discouraging the sale of stolen scrap metals by imposing stiffer penalties on metal thieves is being introduced by Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D., N.Y.).
The legislative effort is backed by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah), Schumer said in a statement.
If enacted, Schumer's measure would put a heavier burden on the thieves, unlike many of the metal theft laws recently adopted by states and cities. Most of the metal theft laws adopted in the past few years impose stricter measures on scrap processors and dealers, requiring scrap industry members to obtain identification from the sellers of metals and to tag and hold purchased metals for up to 10 days.....
