US steel recycling rate reaches record 83.3% in 2008: SRI

The U.S. recycling rate for steel reached a record-high 83.3 percent last year, the Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) said Friday.
More than 82 million tons of U.S.-generated scrap were charged into steelmaking furnaces in the United States and abroad, said Pittsburgh-based SRI, whose recycling rates are based on data from scrap processors, steel producers, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The first three quarters of 2008 saw high levels of steel production and scrap usage in the United States, SRI said. The data includes both domestic scrap consumption and steel scrap exports, which totaled almost 21.5 million tonnes in 2008 and through the first 10 months of 2009 remains on track to match that total this year.
