Semis help push October steel imports 34.2% higher

Higher imports of semi-finished steel—much of it from Russia—helped push total U.S. steel imports up 34.2 percent in October, according to final monthly figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

U.S. steel imports jumped to 1,475,031 tonnes from 1,099,006 tonnes in September, although they were down 47.9 percent from 2,828,486 tonnes in October last year. Year-to-date imports of 12,181,538 tonnes were 51.1 percent below 24,905,160 tonnes in the first 10 months of 2008.....
