Xstrata, union begin Sudbury labor contract talks

Xstrata Plc and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union started talks Wednesday on a new labor contact at the company's nickel operations in Sudbury, Ontario.

A spokesman for the Switzerland-based miner confirmed that negotiations had begun and that proposals were exchanged in a private meeting. A CAW representative also confirmed the talks and added that the union is optimistic a new contract can be negotiated without a strike or lockout.

The current three-year collective bargaining agreement is due to expire Jan. 31. ....
