Alcoa, BPA reach power deal for Intalco smelter

Alcoa Inc. and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) have finalized a power agreement for the company's Intalco smelter in Ferndale, Wash., allowing the 279,000-tonne-per-year smelter to remain open, albeit at less than full operational capacity.
The new contract provides the site with 285 megawatts (MW) of power at the statutory authorized industrial firm power (IP) rate until March 2010, at which time the figure will increase to 320 MW. At that increased level, the plant will be able to operate two potlines, the BPA said, producing metal at a rate of 184,000 tonnes per year, or just under two-thirds of total capacity.....
