Offshore mills trim heavy melting steel scrap buys

Exports of No. 1 heavy melting steel scrap plunged by nearly 30 percent in October compared with the previous month as several key Asian importers trimmed their purchases.

Shipments of this bellwether grade of cut ferrous scrap sagged to 371,479 tonnes, down from 529,382 tonnes in September, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Commerce Department.

Despite the decline, exports through the first 10 months of the year totaled 4,942,755 tonnes, up 13.3 percent from 4,362,819 tonnes in the same 2008 period.....
