Venezuela slices aluminum, steel output to save power

Venezuela's state-owned primary aluminum producers CVG Industria Venezolana de Aluminio CA (Venalum) and CVG Aluminio del Caroni SA (Alcasa) and steelmaker Siderurgica del Orinoco CA (Sidor) are all cutting production in an effort to conserve the country's energy supply in the wake of alleged falling water levels at the Guri hydroelectric dam, the country's largest.
According to Venezuela's official news agency ABN, 360 electrolytic cells will be temporarily shut at Venalum, slicing output there by around 40 percent, or some 14,000 tonnes per month.
Two of the four production lines at Alcasa will also be temporarily idled, the country's basic industry minister Rodolfo Sanz was quoted as saying Tuesday.....
