Union’s New York e-scrap solution: city picks up, manufacturers pay

The solution to New York City's electronic scrap dilemma is for city garbage collectors to make curbside pickups of discarded equipment but with television and computer makers bearing the cost, according to a Teamsters union local.
A federal lawsuit pits electronics makers against the city on that subject.
A 2008 ordinance would require defunct electronic equipment weighing 15 pounds or more to be picked up without charge from non-business addresses in New York City. The program envisions that manufacturers, who have sold huge volumes of equipment that ends up unprofitable to recycle and risky in landfills, should pay for the end-of-life arrangements.
