EPA stiffens hazardous waste rules

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has strengthened its rules governing international shipments of hazardous waste for recycling.

The new measures are meant to increase regulatory oversight and provide stricter controls and greater transparency, the federal agency said.

The rules, which went into effect in late December, also align EPA's hazardous waste shipment regulations with the procedures of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international consortium of 30 countries, including the United States.....
