Zinc output cuts not necessary, top smelters say

China's biggest zinc smelters have decided not to proceed with a rumored third-quarter production cut because they think the market is strong enough to justify current output levels, industry sources said.

Many of China's small and medium-sized zinc producers said earlier this week they would cut output by 10 percent (AMM, July 15). But after top managers from the biggest smelters met Wednesday to discuss market conditions, one executive at the talks said "We don't need to announce any cutbacks to lift prices because we don't think the local market is oversupplied."....
