Steel wire rack maker shuts after USW rebuffs wage cut

Premier Wire Ltd., an Alexandria, Ontario-based manufacturer of steel wire racking for retail displays, shut down suddenly after negotiations with the remaining employees, members of the United Steelworkers union, "bluntly refused" wage concessions, according to Jean-Marc Perron, president of parent company Norfil Inc., Chambly, Quebec.
Premier Wire was losing money because of low productivity and competition from U.S. suppliers since the value of the Canadian dollar increased in relation to the U.S. dollar, he said.....
