Port of Houston reopens after Ike

The Port of Houston reopened Thursday morning, about five days after Hurricane Ike forced its closure.
"Employees are coming back in," a port spokeswoman said. "We're starting to get things back to normal."
A return to normal activity at the port would be welcome news for the steel industry, since Houston is one of the busier ports for U.S. steel imports and exports. It is unclear when normal activity will resume but indications are that shippers, traders and others located at the port are beginning to get things back on track.
But communications remain an issue, and attempts to reach sources at trading companies failed Thursday by phone met either with rapid busy signals, no answer or electronic messages.
Others companies in the area were attempting to resume normal operations Thursday. A source at Houston-based Ranger Steel, a service center specializing in plate products, said power outages were the main issue for the company.....
