Short sea shipping initiative launched

The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has launched its short sea shipping initiative with a dedicated container feeder vessel loaded with scrap metals bound for India and Pakistan.

Sunrise Metals Inc., a Hamilton, Ontario-based scrap metals trader, will provide the materials for the maiden voyage. Much of the metal is ferrous scrap obtained from local scrap suppliers, HPA said.

"We have great faith in the Hamilton Port Authority's ability to make this service a sustainable and economically viable option for us," Amandeep Singh Kaloti, president of Sunrise Metals, said in a statement. "The ability to ship via vessel containerized cargo from Hamilton to Montreal and Halifax for transfer to global markets provides us with a great opportunity to operate efficiently in the Golden Horseshoe."
