Ferrous scrap prices are up between $25 and $100 per gross ton in Texas this month despite minimal or no purchases by some of the mills that are typically major buyers.

Two Texas steel mills are reportedly buying no scrap this month, one of which has no intent to take any in January either. A third Texas mill is buying limited tonnages of No. 1 heavy melt, while a fourth might buy small tonnages in December and January, according to dealers.

Much of the prime scrap that is being shipped this month in Texas is going to export yards in Houston and New Orleans, where the scrap is being shipped to Turkey and Asia. Texas yards are also exporting scrap to Mexico and are transporting scrap to remote locations in the United States. A Mississippi mill is reportedly buying No. 1 busheling from Texas, while a Colorado mill is buying shredded auto scrap from the state.....
