Wheeling-Nisshin forced to lay off workers

Wheeling-Nisshin Inc., Follansbee, W.Va., is the latest to join the list of steel companies being forced to temporarily lay off workers due to a lack of orders.
Rich Carter, chief operating officer of the steel finishing joint venture, said about 90 of the company's 175 employees will be laid off for a week in January. The layoffs are the first in the 20-year history of the company.
"Our volumes have dropped so low over the last several months," Carter said Wednesday. "This company is 20 years old and we've never laid off an employee. This is very painful for us. But it's not a knee-jerk reaction on our part. The level of business activity is just not there."....
