Alcoa layoffs continue in Texas, Indiana

Alcoa Inc. is implementing another wave of layoffs as part of its ongoing cost-reduction efforts in the current environment of falling commodity prices and softer end-market demand.
The Pittsburgh-based company said has laid off about 60 salaried and hourly workers at its Alcoa Mill Products plant in Texarkana, Texas, it said. Employees learned of the layoffs Tuesday afternoon. The Texarkana plant, which employs about 313, produces alloy aluminum sheet and coil products for commercial applications, automotive, architectural, truck, building and construction customers.
There were more than 30 redundancies this week at Alcoa's Auburn, Ind., plant, according to local media reports. This brings jobs levels to about 90 at the plant, which makes auto parts primarily for General Motors Corp., Detroit; Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich; Chrysler LLC, Auburn Hills, Mich.; and Toyota Motor Corp., Tokyo.....
