Evraz Inc. NA’s plate, pipe operations brace for layoffs

Evraz Inc. NA's plate and pipe operations are the latest to feel the heat of shrinking steel industry demand.
Evraz Claymont Steel, Claymont, Del., has laid off 38 production workers at its plate-making operations, a spokeswoman for Evraz Inc. NA said.
The U.S. plate market, heretofore one of the stronger for steel even in the economic downturn, is being affected by a number of previously scheduled projects that now face postponement. Plate prices have tumbled to slightly more than $1,000 per ton from nearly $1,300 in October.....
