Ameristeel sets layoffs at Okla. long products plant

The government-proposed infrastructure development package won't arrive soon enough to prevent some 150 employees of Gerdau Ameristeel Corp.'s Sand Springs, Okla., plant from facing layoff.

The Sand Springs layoffs are part of an overall cost-reduction effort by the Tampa, Fla.-based company that has been undertaken due to a lack of steel orders related in part to the global economic crisis, a company spokesman said.

Officials of the United Steelworkers union were told by the company that about half of the plant's 375 workers will be laid off in February, a report in the Tulsa World in Oklahoma said.....
