Power authority approves contract for Alcoa smelters

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) board of trustees has approved a power supply contract for Alcoa Inc.'s Massena, N.Y., operations.
The terms of the contract stipulate that the NYPA will provide 478 megawatts of low-cost hydropower to the operations in Massena for 30 years following the expiration of Alcoa's current power contract in 2013.
The agreement has an option to extend an additional 10 years contingent on aluminum prices and power availability. Alcoa will use about 60 percent of the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project's generating output. ....
