Most beverage companies fall short on recycling

When it comes to container recycling, many beverage companies in the United States have made significant strides forward—but there is still much room for improvement, according to a new scorecard from the As You Sow Foundation, a San Francisco-based advocacy and watchdog group.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. received the highest grade, a "C," followed by Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., PepsiCo Inc. and Nestlé Waters North America, all of which received a "C–."

The organization's latest publication, "Waste and Opportunity U.S. Beverage Container Recycling Scorecard and Report," said that more than 200 billion beverage containers are sold in the United States each year, but more than 130 billion of those are sent to landfills or incinerated. Only 43 percent of aluminum beverage containers—650,000 tonnes out of 1.5 million tonnes sold—were recycled in 2007. ....
