Canada port strike talks restart

Talks aimed at averting a labor disruption at British Columbia ports, which handle large volumes of metallurgical coal and metals shipments, are set to resume Friday after breaking off earlier in the week, according to officials close to the negotiations.
The continued threat of an early-January port shutdown on Canada's West Coast has already resulted in some planned containerized cargo shipments from Asia being rerouted to other Western ports, sources said.
"It's very unfortunate. We got word (the rerouting) began late last week but I'm assuming shipments won't be rerouted in earnest until we get closer to the labor deadlines," said Greg Vurdela, vice-president of marketing and information services with the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association. ....
