Gerdau Macsteel cuts 75% of work force at Jackson SBQ plant

Gerdau Macsteel, a manufacturer of special bar quality (SBQ) products in Jackson, Mich., sent out Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices Monday to salaried and hourly employees of a plant shutdown and layoff that will go on indefinitely.

"They are idling the furnace, caster and rolling mill. There will be 210 union-represented employees laid off indefinitely," plus 90 salaried people for a total job cut of 300 beginning Jan. 16, according to Charles Crowley, president of United Steelworkers union Local 8339 in Jackson. The company employs about 400 people.....
