No fat ladies in this group, but the opera is over. After nearly 73 years, the "Singing Men of Steel" have performed for the last time.
The choral group, made up of male workers at ArcelorMittal USA Inc.'s steel operations in Weirton, W.Va., the former Weirton Steel Corp., gave its last performance Dec. 16 at Weirton's First Christian Church. The group has been performing regularly since it was founded in March 1936 and its first performance at the Weir High Auditorium. Weirton's WHSV Channel 3, which covered the final performance, said the group was stopping due to the ravages of time, age and illness among its members.
