Russian submarine in Rhode Island slated for scrapping

An aged Soviet submarine that was part of a Rhode Island naval museum before it sank in the Providence River last year will be scrapped by the end of January if no one agrees to buy the vessel, its owner said.
The 282-foot submarine, also known as Juliett 484, had a role in a 2002 Hollywood film "K-19 The Widowmaker" before it was acquired by the Russian Sub Museum in Providence, R.I. It sank during a storm in April 2007.
U.S. Army and Navy dive crews raised the sub in a training exercise in July, but inspections showed that it had deteriorated during its 15 months underwater. Restoring it as a museum exhibit would cost more than $1 million, according to Frank Lennon, director of the Russian Sub Museum and president of the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, a private, nonprofit group.....
