W.Va. smelter eyes possible tax break

All options, including tax breaks and other incentives, are being explored to keep Century Aluminum Co.'s Ravenswood smelter open in the state, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said.
Manchin met with Century executives and various elected officials last Tuesday to discuss the dire situation (AMM, Dec. 24). The Monterey, Calif.-based aluminum producer has already idled one potline, reducing the plant's primary aluminum production by about 3,540 tonnes per month, equivalent to nearly 42,500 tonnes per year. The remaining output will be shut down by Feb. 15 unless aluminum prices stabilize or if Century is able to dramatically....
