Walter Industries unit closes Alabama met coal mine

United Land Corp., a subsidiary of Walter Industries Inc., has ceased underground mining operations at the Kodiak Mine in Shelby County, Ala., because of high operating costs and low prices for metallurgical coal.
Tampa, Fla.-based Walter Industries expects to write down $20 million before taxes in the fourth quarter of this year from the mine closure and also plans to offer jobs at other sites to many of the 90 contracted workers that will leave the mine.....
