Chicago price index hits 59-year low

Further indications of the weakness of the economy emerged Tuesday, as members of the Chicago chapter of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported that an index of prices paid reached a 59-year low and order backlogs reached a 28-year low this month.

The prices paid index fell to the lowest since June 1949, the group said in its Chicago Business Barometer report. Fifty-eight percent of survey respondents said prices fell in December, compared with 28 percent in November and 20 percent in October.....
