Boklund, ex-Oregon Steel chief, dies at 69

Thomas B. Boklund, a blunt, straight-talking engineer who led the former Oregon Steel Mills Inc. during its initial years of growth as a public company as well as during some of its most rancorous relations with organized labor, died unexpectedly on Dec. 27.
Services for Boklund, who was 69 years old, are scheduled Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Oswego, Ore. The cause of death couldn't be determined.
Boklund was chairman of Portland-based Oregon Steel, now the Evraz Inc. NA subsidiary of Russia's Evraz Group SA, until 2001. He first joined a predecessor company to Oregon Steel in 1962, leaving in 1970 and returning in 1973. After serving in various posts in what was then a division of privately held Gilmore Steel Corp., San Francisco, he was named Oregon Steel's chief executive officer in 1985, about three years before the company's initial public offering of common stock.....
