Atlantic Wire pleads guilty to violating Clean Water Act

Atlantic Wire Co. LLC pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act and one count of submitting false statements to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CDEP) with regard to polluting the Branford River.
According to court documents and testimony obtained by AMM, Atlantic Wire, a Branford, Conn., manufacturer of steel wire and rod processor, used sulfuric and hydrochloric acid as part of the stripping process and highly alkaline materials as part of its coating process. These activities generated highly acidic and/or caustic wastewaters that contained various pollutants, including iron, zinc, copper, and suspended solids, which killed crabs in the river.....
