Aluminum recycling luster dims report

Aluminum has the best reclamation rate among beverage container materials in the United States, but loses its luster when the environmental impact of replacing landfilled containers is factored in, according to a report from the Container Recycling Institute (CRI).

By the institute's calculations, the proportion of beverage containers sold in the United States in 2006 that ended up recycled was 34 percent overall 45 percent for aluminum, 27.8 percent for glass, 26.4 percent for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic and 23.5 percent for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic.....
