Exide Technologies settles smelter row with Pa. DEP

As part of an enforcement settlement with a secondary lead smelter in Laureldale, Pa., Pennsylvania's environmental agency has required its owner, Exide Technologies, Alpharetta, Ga., to create an environmental management program that meets international standards and is certified by an outside auditor.
While Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for at least a decade has urged companies to opt for the ISO-14001 self-inspection standard of the International Organization for Standardization, the idea of an enforcement quid pro quo is rarely acknowledged.....
