Exide facing fine if equipment not in by year-end

Exide Technologies Inc. has until the end of the year to install new wastewater treatment equipment at its Muncie, Ind., lead smelter or pay the additional $49,800 civil penalty imposed by Indiana's environmental regulators.

Exide has already paid $12,450 in fines as part of a $62,250 civil penalty stemming from a list of alleged hazardous waste violations that the state's Department of Environmental Management says its inspectors found there last year.....
