Thieves in Detroit who steal copper wire and other metals and then sell it as scrap might get more than they bargained for.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said she is seeking private funds to pay the salaries for two full-time prosecutors who will work solely on putting metal thieves out of business. Speaking to the Detroit City Council Thursday, Worthy said she also plans to meet with Wayne County Circuit Court judges and urge them to issue tougher sentences against metal thieves. Those arrested and charged with stealing metals now face only misdemeanor charges. Worthy told the council members she believes such crimes must be punished more harshly because of the damage done to public lighting, homes and businesses.....
