Bay Bridge picks up two ‘Ghosts’ for scrapping

Two "Ghost Fleet" vessels that were slated to be dismantled by a now-defunct Sparrows Point, Md., shipbreaker will instead be scrapped at a Bay Bridge Enterprises LLC facility in Chesapeake, Va.
Bay Bridge will receive $95,000 to dismantle the Hoist and $695,000 to dismantle the Sphinx under the terms of contracts announced Wednesday by the U.S. Maritime Administration (Marad).
Both ships, now moored at a shipyard near Baltimore, Md., had been part of Marad's National Defense Reserve Fleet, known as the Ghost Fleet, anchored on the James River in southern Virginia. Contracts to scrap both ships were originally awarded to North American Ship Recycling Inc. (NASR) earlier this year (AMM, July 23).....
