Grim outlook sparks temporary plant idling by Detroit’s Big Three

The Big Three Detroit-area automakers plan to temporarily idle a host of pickup truck and sports-utility vehicle plants in response to dwindling sales and grim sales forecasts for the New Year.
Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., has already idled a plant in Dearborn, Mich., that makes F-150 pickups and another in Louisville, Ky., that makes Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs. The move comes two weeks earlier than regularly scheduled holiday outages, Ford spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said Tuesday.
General Motors Corp., Detroit, meanwhile, plans to idle truck and SUV plants in Flint, Mich., and Janesville, Wis., for the weeks of Jan. 7 and Jan. 14. The Flint plant makes such pickups as the Chevrolet Silverado GMC Sierra, while Janesville makes the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Suburban SUVs.....
