Scrap exports hit record $1.16B in October

The value of U.S. scrap metal exports totaled a record $1.16 billion in October, inching above the $1.15-billion record set in June and well above the $965-million total in September and $888 million in October last year.

Since the weakening dollar might have played a role, physical quantities could provide perspective. By weight, aluminum surpassed its old peak by 10 percent (disregarding the May 2006 figure, which generally is considered unreliable); the copper and brass group fell a hair short of setting a record; and scrap iron and steel exports were....
