Kazakhstan’s first aluminum smelter starts up

Eurasian Natural Resources Corp. Plc (ENRC), London, has begun ramping up production at its $900-million aluminum smelter in Kazakhstan, the country's first.
The newly inaugurated smelter has an initial capacity of 62,500 tonnes per year but is expected to expand to 125,000 tonnes in 2008 and to 250,000 tonnes per year by 2011.
The smelter began production within 27 months of the first brick being laid in May 2005, ENRC said in a statement. "I am proud to have taken part in the realization of this great project, which was achieved on budget and ahead of schedule," Johannes Sittard, ENRC's chief executive officer, said. "The production of aluminum will be of significant benefit to ENRC and the Kazakh economy."....
