Senate approves stripped-down energy bill

Manufacturers celebrated the passage of an energy bill in the Senate late Thursday that left $21 billion in tax breaks to big energy companies intact.

Earlier Thursday, a bill that included a rollback of the tax credits ended up one vote shy of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican-led filibuster. Once the tax increases were eliminated, the bill passed the Senate easily by a vote of 86-6. President Bush is expected to sign it into law.....
