Senate approves stripped-down energy bill

Manufacturers celebrated the passage of an energy bill in the Senate late Thursday that left intact $21 billion in tax breaks for big energy companies.
Earlier in the day, a bill that included a rollback of the tax credits ended up one vote shy of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican-led filibuster. Once the tax provision was eliminated, the bill easily passed the Senate by a vote of 86-6 and President Bush is expected to sign it into law.....
