Wheeling-Pitt job cuts near union leader

Job cuts at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. appear to be on the way as the Wheeling, W.Va.-based steelmaker looks to right-size its operations, according to a union leader at one plant.
"They're talking about job reductions and layoffs," said Ken Aspenleiter, president of United Steelworkers union Local 1190, which represents employees at Wheeling-Pittsburgh's Steubenville, Ohio, facility. "Their comment was right-sizing. They indicated all the plants are at risk." He said he had had several meetings with Wheeling-Pittsburgh executives this past week.
A Wheeling-Pittsburgh spokesman downplayed the potential reductions, saying the possible work force actions aren't new news. "We've consistently said over the past two months via filings with regulators and through communications to shareholders and employees that we are looking at every facet of the company to align the people, products and physical assets to return the company to profitability as quickly as possible," he said. "That process is in full swing."....
