Alcoa may abandon plan to build power plant for Eastalco smelter

Alcoa Inc., Pittsburgh, is poised to abandon a plan to build a coal-fired power plant on vacant U.S. Navy property to power a restart of the company's idled 195,000-tonne-per-year Eastalco smelter in Frederick, Md.

The company was looking at the feasibility of building a dedicated coal-fired plant on nearby land in Charles County leased from the U.S. Navy, but the cost of such a project looks to be too high to make it viable. "We've been looking into it but the costs appear to be prohibitive," an Alcoa spokesman said.....
