Vale Inco to run Sudbury facilities nonstop in ’08

Vale Inco Ltd., Toronto, expects to see record nickel production from its Sudbury, Ontario, operations in 2008 following a decision not to conduct an annual maintenance shutdown next year.
Vale Inco's 2008 production in the Sudbury Basin is targeted at 298 million pounds of nickel, a 24-percent increase from around 240 million pounds this year.
"As far as shutdowns go, our history has been to shut down annually for maintenance purposes," a company spokesman said Tuesday. "For the last several years, however, we have worked at extending the duration of continuous operations between planned maintenance periods to closer to 18 months through a program of predictive and preventive maintenance.
