Brazilian authorities bar Usipar from making pig iron

New Brazilian pig iron producer Usinagem e Parafusos Ltda. (Usipar) has been ordered to halt production by authorities in Para state after evidence reportedly was discovered that the company was violating Brazilian environmental laws.
But Luiz Carlos da Costa Monteiro, Usipar's president, said the ban is the result of a misunderstanding on the part of the Secretaria Especial do Meio Ambiente (Sema), Para state's environmental watchdog, and he vowed that production at the 500,000-tonne-per-year plant near Barcarena would continue for the time being using one furnace. The other furnace is currently out of operation for maintenance.
All of Usipar's production is exported to steel mills and foundries in the United States and Italy.....
